Our skin is our first line of defense. It is the largest organ in our body and it protects every other organ against the environment. In every condition, hot or cold, dry or wet, it is our skin that takes the first hit. Our skin is also one of the first things about our external appearance that everybody notices. Good skin is a coveted feature. Flawless glowing skin is everyone’s dream. It is important to take good care of your skin and give it the right nourishment and care. In order to do this, the first step to take is to get to know your skin. There are many skin types and skin can be as unique as the wearer. So first you must identify whether your skin is dry or normal or oily or combination skin.

The simplest way to identify dry skin is to pay attention to how your skin feels when it is cleansed and left bare. If your skin feels tight and stretched, it is a reliable indicator of dry skin. Flakiness is also an indicator of dry skin. The best way to care for dry skin is to use a good quality rich moisturiser after a gentle round of exfoliation. Daily gentle exfoliation is vital to ensure that the top layer of dead cells are gone and any serum or lotion that you apply is properly absorbed.

Normal to combination skin can be identified if you experience dryness in the cheeks but the T-Zone remains shiny. Daily gentle exfoliation followed by a good gel moisturiser is good for this type of skin. Ensure that you do not use any product that is too strong or too rich as this can eventually lead to the dryness because the skin will stop producing the normal amount of oil. If you suspect that you have oily skin, the best way to confirm this is by gently pressing blotting paper on your skin and holding it up to the light. If you see patches of oiliness, there you have it – oily skin. Again it is important to ensure that your pores do not get clogged with oily excretions, so it is important to follow a daily gentle exfoliation routine. Use a light moisturiser of good quality to keep your skin hydrated. Oily skin tends to look young for longer and develop less wrinkles and is the most coveted skin type, but it does need its share of care too. Eating right, drinking lots of water and getting plenty of exercise in fresh air is the best way to care for all skin types, so make sure you work these necessities into your lifestyle! Happy skin to you!
